Wine Blog: Polvanera Primitivo 2022 — A Terroir-Driven Puglian Gem

Origins & Viticulture

Nestled between Acquaviva delle Fonti and Gioia del Colle, Cantine Polvanera is a farming venture rooted in tradition and innovation, spearheaded by oenologist Filippo Cassano since the early 2000s. The “14” label is sourced specifically from the Marchesana vineyard, where vines thrive in red ferrous soils atop limestone—fertile terrain that imparts striking minerality and freshness. The estate emphasizes organic farming, with minimal chemical inputs and a respectful balance between yield and quality. A unique highlight: their cellar is carved 8 meters into limestone rock, providing naturally stable temperatures that aid in elegant maturation.

Winemaking & Composition

The Polvanera 14 is made from 100% Primitivo grapes, vinified organically. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by 12 months aging in steel, and another 12 months bottle-age before release. Alcohol sits at a generous 15% vol, with a residual sugar of about 4 g/L—dry, yet plush. In some instances, sources note a very similar sibling known as "La Marchesana," with mid-September harvest, stainless steel fermentation, and about 5 g/L residual sugar.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Deep ruby-red, gleaming with garnet highlights.
  • Aroma: A fragrant medley featuring ripe plum and cherry, accentuated with thyme, tobacco, and licorice.
  • Palate: Well-structured with velvety tannins, offering a rich, long, and satisfying finish.
  • Additional descriptors from other sources point to black fruits with floral nuances, full-bodied texture, and an almond-kissed finish.
  • Score: Earned 88 points from Falstaff—praising its dark ruby hue, prune and cold smoke notes, and Mediterranean warmth, though noting that the tannins feel a bit rough and the wine slightly out of balance.

Pairings & Serving

This Primitivo pairs beautifully with meat ragù, grilled red meats, first courses rich in tomato and meat, and aged cheeses—the ideal match for its structure and flavor profile. Classic pairings from other sources include spicy dishes, game, and mature cheeses, all of which complement its bold character and velvety tannins. Serve it at a comfortable 16–18 °C to enjoy its full aromatic expression.

Context & Style

Primitivo from the cooler Gioia del Colle zone is typically more elegant and fresher than the brawny, intense styles of Manduria—this wine exemplifies that refined profile. It is a terroir-driven expression, combining depth with clarity, thanks to its limestone soils and thoughtful winemaking.

Why It Matters

Polvanera Primitivo “14” 2022 is a compelling example of modern Apulian winemaking—where organic traditions meet contemporary clarity and balance. It’s a wine that tells a story of place, heritage, and meticulous craft, offering depth without sacrificing freshness.
